Here are three things to do in Akron this weekend. Celebrate John Brown’s 225th birthday with a hike and a history lesson Friday, May 9, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the John Brown Monument. Following the hike, guests are invited to eat cake and ice cream and check out the “Black History in Perkins Woods” exhibit at the John Brown House. This event is free and open to the public.

Fran Wilson secured the Democratic primary seat for Akron City Council’s Ward 1 after defeating incumbent Samuel DeShazior and candidate Emily Durway with nearly 52% of the vote in Tuesday’s primary election. Incumbent Bruce Bolden is the presumptive council member after he held on to his Ward 8 seat by defeating challenger and fellow Democrat N.J. Akbar with more than 56% of the vote. There is no Republican challenger.

Ohio’s 2025 primary election is Tuesday, May 6 — polling places will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.Voters who are unsure whether they are registered to vote can check their status online. Precincts and polling locations can be found on the Ohio Secretary of State’s website. Absentee ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by May 5.

What is Akron’s number one priority? Public safety, according to Mayor Shammas Malik. “As we’ve said a lot.” City officials and leaders of Akron’s safety forces shared information about new and ongoing public safety initiatives at a Thursday press conference in the Ocasek Auditorium in downtown Akron. The updates included stories of Akron’s new violence prevention team and a look at a mental health outreach team’s first year, as well as plans to bring more sports opportunities to Akron’s youth.
