Shanklin & District History Society (S&DHS) are holding a Free Open Day Exhibition on Saturday 24th May from 10:00am to 15:00 at the Falcon Cross Hall in Shanklin. The aim of this annual event is to share our ever growing S&DHS Archive and celebrate the history of Shanklin. The wide ranging display will include images of Shanklin Railway Station through time and mark the end of World War II with a display of military artefacts.

Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club Junior squad returned to the iconic Olympic Venue of Dorney Lake, for the annual Ball Cup South Regatta on Sunday, taking a record-breaking clutch of 4 gold and 3 silver medals. Gold winning performances came from Connie Batley-Smith in both the J14 and J15 single sculls (1x) and with Olivia Mumberson in the 2x, crossing the line with impressive margins over the rest of the field.

3 races were staged at the Shanklin Regatta before it was suspended due to deteriorating sea conditions. Shanklin Rowing Club found themselves high on the aggregate shield with 1st, 2nd and 4th places recorded in the first 2 races. The Boys Quad of James Travers, Sam Meadowcroft, Isaac King, Fin Diffey and Esme Walters (cox) stormed to victory, winning by over 3 lengths on home water.
EARLEY, COOK AND HAYDON COMPETE FOR WIGHTLINK CYCLE RACING TEAM IN SCOTLAND

Nicholas Earley, Ewan Cook and Alfie Haydon from the Wightlink Cycle Racing Team Mountain Bike squad made the long journey to Scotland at the weekend to compete in the 3rd round of the National XC MTB Series at Glentress. The course started with a big climb followed by a flowing descent with lots of berms and jumps leading into a smaller climb then a flat bottom section. In the Junior category, Ewan and Alfie had good starts and were in the mix up the first climb.

Isle of Wight golfer Brandon Robinson Thompson equalled the Regnum Carya course record at the Turkish Open on Saturday (10th May). Brandon fired a 3rd round 62 to move 3 shots clear ahead of the final round. He hit 3 birdies in his first 5 holes, all from inside 6 feet. He chipped in for eagle at the 12th, then birdied 3 of the last 4 holes, with the highlight a 22-foot putt at the 16th.

West Wight Middle School – now sadly demolished – served West Wight villages for 40 years between 1971 and 2011. No school has served students aged 11+ from the less densely populated side of the Island since. The middle school was situated at the junction of Windmill Lane and Queens Road in Freshwater. At one time, it was colloquially known as ‘Windmill Lane School’.

Cowes Sports have claimed local bragging rights following a narrow Gold Cup victory over East Cowes Vics in front of a near 1,000 strong crowd this afternoon (Saturday). The game was played in front of a 982 strong crowd at the Zilch Waste Stadium. Such was the interest in the local grudge match, punters were still queuing to enter the ground more than 30 minutes after the game had kicked off.
