The Isle of Wight voted by a margin of of over 2 to 1 to remain in the then European Economic Community (EEC) in the referendum of 6th June 1975. There were 40,837 ‘Yes’ votes as opposed to 17,375 ‘No’ votes with 116 spoilt papers. The result of the previous day’s voting was announced at 13:30 on Friday 7th June. 58,328 votes were cast from an electorate of 87,454 – a turnout of 68%.

Dan Cox scored 101 off 59 balls as Ventnor were vanquished by Hampshire CCC in a Twenty20 game at Steephill on Wednesday (4th June). Hampshire won the toss and were put in to bat, with Basey top scoring for the county side with 50 off 34 balls before being caught by Attrill off the bowling of Lucy. Captain Kelly made an unbeaten 49 off 23 balls (including 5 sixes), with his side racing to a total of 206/6.

Shanklin & Sandown Golf Club – the Island’s premier course – hosts the Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands Amateur Championship this weekend for the first time since 2012, starting on Friday (6th June). This is the 12th time the club have hosted the event – known as the Sloane-Stanley Challenge Cup – since 1908. Spectators are welcome on all 3 days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) at Shanklin & Sandown GC, which starts with the 36-hole qualifier on Friday.

Harwoods Isle of Wight Division 1 League teams Bembridge and Vectis have merged their adult sections to form Bembridge & Vectis FC. The new, merged side will field 3 adult sides in the local league in the 2025/26 season – in Division 1, Combination 1 and Combination 2. The first team will be run by current Bembridge manager Justin Malin – his 9th season as manager and 13th at the club. He will be supported by Vectis FC First Team manager Reece Biedler.
