ISLE OF WIGHT VOTED TO REMAIN IN THE COMMON MARKET 50 YEARS AGO

The Isle of Wight voted by a margin of of over 2 to 1 to remain in the then European Economic Community (EEC) in the referendum of 6th June 1975. There were 40,837 ‘Yes’ votes as opposed to 17,375 ‘No’ votes with 116 spoilt papers. The result of the previous day’s voting was announced at 13:30 on Friday 7th June. 58,328 votes were cast from an electorate of 87,454 – a turnout of 68%.

Dan Cox scored 101 off 59 balls as Ventnor were vanquished by Hampshire CCC in a Twenty20 game at Steephill on Wednesday (4th June). Hampshire won the toss and were put in to bat, with Basey top scoring for the county side with 50 off 34 balls before being caught by Attrill off the bowling of Lucy. Captain Kelly made an unbeaten 49 off 23 balls (including 5 sixes), with his side racing to a total of 206/6.

Shanklin & Sandown Golf Club – the Island’s premier course – hosts the Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands Amateur Championship this weekend for the first time since 2012, starting on Friday (6th June). This is the 12th time the club have hosted the event – known as the Sloane-Stanley Challenge Cup – since 1908. Spectators are welcome on all 3 days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) at Shanklin & Sandown GC, which starts with the 36-hole qualifier on Friday.

Harwoods Isle of Wight Division 1 League teams Bembridge and Vectis have merged their adult sections to form Bembridge & Vectis FC. The new, merged side will field 3 adult sides in the local league in the 2025/26 season – in Division 1, Combination 1 and Combination 2. The first team will be run by current Bembridge manager Justin Malin – his 9th season as manager and 13th at the club. He will be supported by Vectis FC First Team manager Reece Biedler.

Isle of Wight country-infused blues rockers Kindred Found will release their fifth single ‘Addicted to You’ on all major streaming platforms on 9th June. The song was written by guitarist Dan Smith and vocalist Dave Eastman during the 2020 lockdown. It deals with that familiar struggle of toxic relationships and how people can sometimes not be good for each other, drawing inspiration from the Derek and the Dominos album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.

Local officials of 2 education unions -the NEU and UNISON – met with West Wight Labour MP Richard Quigley on 28th May to discuss inequalities in the primary school closure process. The previous month the 2 unions – together with Unison – had written to both Island MPs stressing the need for a fairer process between local authority and non-local authority schools with regard to closures.

The Lighthouse Clinic and Lighthouse Education have announced an initiative to bring MASCED (Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection) Accredited Training to beauty professionals across the Isle of Wight. While the MASCED training, developed by the national skin cancer charity Skcin, has been available for some time, this marks the start of a dedicated local push to roll it out across the island’s beauty sector.

The Isle of Wight Bonsai Society have organised a talk by renowned Bonsai artist and potter Alex Rudd, founder of the European Bonsai Potter Collective on Saturday 7th June. Alex will be presenting pots and discussing the skill of matching trees to pots. Members will be bringing examples to critique. It is a very good opportunity to learn how to improve your Bonsai collection. The talk will be held at the Scout HQ Woodbine close, Newport PO30 1AN between 11:00 and 13:00.
