YORK — Dale Sweek took a job at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services because it paid well. He only stayed there, though, because he thought he could help people. But after six years of working at the women’s prison in York, Sweek said, he had been through so much physical and mental stress that he was “broken down.” He thought of the coworker who had a heart attack shortly after retiring.

YORK — In February, Robert Duncan was driving from the Denver airport to his Nebraska home when he was pulled over by deputies from the York County Sheriff’s Office. At first, he thought it was because he was on the phone — he was talking to his son. But the deputy proceeded to tell him his brake lights were not on, which Duncan said he thought seemed plausible.
