    MITCHELL — Sawyer Stoebner got out to Spearfish a day before everyone else. The rising senior for Mitchell High School had a visit with the Black Hills State University women’s basketball program a day prior to playing in a camp with the Kernels, and about a month later, Stoebner took to Twitter to announce she’d be making plenty more trips out to Spearfish, as she committed to play basketball for the Yellow Jackets for the next four years. “It just felt right,” Stoebner said of the fit with BHSU.

    MITCHELL — For all the time he’s spent in the water, Brock Russell has never been in the ocean salt water. In fact, he’s never even seen the ocean. That’s about to change for the 16-year-old Mitchell native, though, as he prepares to head out to Irvine, California, for the Junior Nationals Championships on July 31 through Aug. 4. But that’s only after he swims at the state championships in Aberdeen on July 22 and 23 and the USA Futures Championships in Fargo, North Dakota, on July 26-30.

    AGAR, S.D. — The top 20 boys and eight girls on the SDGA Sanford Golf Series played in the series championship Monday at Sutton Bay Golf Course. Eli Anema, of Harrisburg, won the boys championship with a 3-under 69, including a hole-in-one on Hole 13. Tanna Phares, of Rapid City, won the girls championship with an even-par 72.

    MITCHELL — With the regular season officially in the rearview mirror, the Class B American Legion baseball region tournaments are set to get underway this week. In this week’s edition of the Diamond Report, the Mitchell Republic sports staff takes a look at each double-elimination regional bracket with area teams, breaking down the squads vying for astate tournament berth. Seven region tournament winners will advance to the state competition next week.
