Inside his royal blue food truck on a recent Saturday, Randy Bernosky took an order for a sandwich called “The Pig Pen.” It’s massive with smoked pork, bacon, coleslaw, pepper jack cheese, arugula, and chipotle BBQ sauce. It’s not easy to eat and Bernosky said that’s the point. “It's a messy sandwich, and you just got to get primal with it,” he said as he pulled the sandwich off the grill.

Alaska is leading the nation in job growth, and federal funding is a primary reason. That was a key takeaway from a virtual forum Thursday with economists from University of Alaska Anchorage’s Institute of Social and Economic Research. Brett Watson is an assistant professor of economics at UAA. It took the economy longer to recover from the COVID pandemic, he said, but now, it’s the opposite.

Donald Trump has upended the government in the first 100 days of his second presidential term. He’s made his mark on Alaska in the process. In part that’s because the federal government has a big presence here, the state with the most federal land. Alaska also has, or had, a significant federal workforce and benefited from higher than average spending per capita. Trump has also written orders specifically for Alaska.

Since President Trump took office, the price of a barrel of oil from Alaska has declined about 10%, and the Trump administration would like the price to drop even more. The administration has called for $50-per-barrel oil as an effort to curb inflation.

The Spice and Tea Exchange in South Anchorage imports teas, spices, salts and sugars from nearly 60 countries. Liz Eldridge has owned the shop for nine years. She started preparing for tariffs in January by bulking up on the store’s most popular items and products from countries at high risk for tariffs, including China. Eldridge said it’s been hard to compete with larger companies that are trying to do the same thing. “The demand has already skyrocketed," she said.
