Margie Thomson sat in her office, holding a heart made of clay in her hands. It’s painted the colors of the transgender pride flag – pink, white and blue. Thomson is a therapist here in Juneau, and she said she’s nervous to speak publicly about the risks to gender-affirming care in Alaska. But, now, she said, is the time to stand up and use her voice to support her clients, who are overwhelmingly transgender.

Republican Nick Begich III maintained his lead over Democratic Congresswoman Mary Peltola after the Division of Elections posted an updated results tally late Tuesday night. Begich now has about 49% of first-place votes to Peltola’s nearly 46%. That’s a difference of nearly 10,000 votes. If neither of the candidates win more than 50% of first-place votes once all valid ballots are counted, the winner will be determined by ranked choice tabulation on Nov. 20.

Anchorage School District officials on Friday announced seven elementary schools that they’re proposing to close over the next three years as the number of students in the district continues to decline. The district will soon start taking public feedback on its proposal, and the Anchorage School Board must ultimately approve the school closures. These are the neighborhood schools the district is recommending be shuttered.

A 22-year-old man was shot and killed early Monday at a Palmer gas station, police say. Police have arrested Isaac Beshaw, 22 of Palmer, on a murder charge in the death of Steven Williams, who also lived in Palmer, police said in a statement. According to the statement, officers were called to the Speedway Express gas station on Glacier View Avenue around 12:40 a.m. Monday. They found Williams dead “from apparent gunshot wounds,” the statement says.
