Awful Announcing
Awful Announcing is a sports blog founded by Brian Powell, a Maryland native and graduate of James Madison University. Brian began his career in sports as an intern for the WUSA's Philadelphia Charge and later worked with the Washington Wizards in early 2004. Although these roles were fulfilling, they didn't provide enough financial stability, leading him to transition into marketing for a large homebuilder in the Washington D.C. area. In May 2006, he launched Awful Announcing. By early 2007, he also joined the Sporting News as a contributor, where he wrote previews and reviews of weekend sports television and other articles throughout the week. What started as a personal project quickly gained traction, becoming one of the most discussed and linked blogs online. The site mainly highlights the mishaps and absurdities within sports media, while also offering critiques and reviews of figures in the sports industry. It has gained recognition on platforms like SportsCenter, ESPN Radio, WFAN, and various newspapers nationwide. In 2007, Awful Announcing received an honorable mention for Best Non-Corporate Sports Website in SI.com’s Richard Deitsch Media Awards. The blog is also renowned for its unique ability to uncover videos that capture media personalities in funny or unexpected situations. Awful Announcing takes pride in sharing content that other outlets may overlook and is committed to continuing this tradition in the years to come.
