Uni Watch

Uni Watch is a media initiative that dives deep into the intricate details of sports uniforms, exploring them with great enthusiasm and precision. It's not simply about fashion; it's focused on preserving and showcasing the visual history of sports design, celebrating the love for tiny details as its own reward. If this idea doesn't resonate with you, that's okay—Uni Watch isn't for everyone, and there will always be those who Don’t Get It™. However, for fans of detail-oriented analysis, structured information, and sports history, you’ve found the right place. Uni Watch first appeared in May 1999 as a column in The Village Voice's sports section (which already featured a column on hockey fights, so adding a uniform-focused column was a natural fit). Initially, it was a brief column tailored for print, lacking any photo links. When The Village Voice discontinued its sports section in 2003, the column temporarily moved to Slate.com (where you can still find that content). In the summer of 2004, it found a new home at ESPN.com, where it remains active today (you can view that content here). Additionally, this blog was launched on May 17, 2006, to complement the column.

Good Monday morning, Uni Watchers. I hope everyone had a good weekend and a nice Mother’s Day. ICYMI, over the weekend, Anthony posted a really fun think piece on the “City” (Edition, Connect, Rivalry) uni-trend Nike is on the past few years. Definitely check that out if you didn’t see it previously. After finally, and officially, unveiling their 2025 City Connect uniforms last week, the Arizona Diamondbacks debuted the new unis on Friday evening against the Dodgers.

This was actually a Ticker item from Wednesday, but it’s also one of those funny uniform mix-ups that really deserves a short article, if only for the comedic value. Buddy Heild became the latest athlete to enter play wearing the “wrong” uniform — in his case, guard Buddy Hield hit the court in blue-trimmed shorts, which clashed with his teammates’ gold-trimmed ones.

Fans of Arena Football will likely recognize the name “New York Dragons,” a team born in 1995 as the “Iowa Barnstormers” (whose helmet was one of the all time greats), and who moved to New York and began play as the Dragons in 2001. Sadly, that league folded in 2008. Since then, there have been several different Arena leagues (including a 2024 reboot of the original Arena League) which have cropped up over the years.

Good morning Uni Watchers. It’s Friday — we made it!While the major sports make up the lion’s share of our uniform coverage here, I’ve tried to also include some other sports’ uniforms as much as possible, and fortunately we’ve had a number of readers (plus our own Anthony Emerson and Jamie Rathjen, who are both soccer guys, and Jamie covers many women’s sports uns as well) who’ve contributed over the years to the non-major sports.

A few weeks ago, I ran the first of a series in which reader Brad Bierman has collected, mounted and framed every (or almost every) patch worn by every Major League franchise, and he’ll be periodically showing them off. His first collection was for the Athletics (in several of their homes), and our next edition featured Brad’s Chicago Cubs patch collection. And most recently, we took a look at his (HUGE!) San Francisco Giants collection.
