CHEYENNE — It’s been nearly two and a half years since 11-year-old Paul Pine died by suicide at Carpenter Elementary School. Paul had a learning disability that set him academically behind his fellow classmates. He struggled to read, had behavioral health issues and repeated kindergarten, at his parents’ request.

SHERIDAN — Kindergarten through 12th grade teacher recruitment and retention is among the Wyoming Legislature’s Joint Education Committee’s priority topics for its interim work. Wyoming Department of Education Chief of Staff Dicky Shanor said Wyoming has more than 15 subjects with a “critical shortage.” He explained a critical shortage occurs when 5% or more of the teachers in a subject area are teaching without a full Professional Teaching Standards Board license.

Sheridan County employees could receive a buyout option in the coming weeks as the county grapples with a budget shortfall. At a special meeting last week, the Sheridan County Board of County Commissioners directed department heads and elected officials to rework their proposed spending for Fiscal Year 2026, which begins July 1.
