Based in Decatur, Illinois, our broadcast area spans 21 counties, including Cass, Champaign, Christian, Coles, Cumberland, De Witt, Douglas, Edgar, Effingham, Ford, Iroquois, Logan, Macon, Menard, Morgan, Moultrie, Piatt, Sangamon, Shelby, Vermilion, and Warren County in Indiana. Our reporters cover an impressive 11,800 square miles, which represents 21% of Illinois' total land area. The farthest city we report from is Beaverville in Iroquois County, located 134 miles away. As the only station in a hyphenated market, WAND-TV uniquely serves the entire area without needing a secondary signal. Since we first went on air as WTVP on August 16, 1953, we have been a pioneering force in Central Illinois, being one of the first 19 ABC affiliates. Our call letters changed to WAND in 1966 following our acquisition by LIN Broadcasting. In 2005, we transitioned from ABC to NBC. Then, in November 2007, Block Communications acquired the remaining 33% stake in WAND from LIN Television, integrating WAND into a family of stations that includes WDRB-TV, WLIO-TV, and KTRV-TV.
