Delmonica Gallipeau, a 7th grade English Language Arts teacher at Quail Hollow Middle School, took a roundabout path to education. She got her teaching degree in 1992, but spent more than 20 years working in banking. In 2017, she finally decided to pursue her passion and began a career in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. But that meant taking a cut in pay, and running a side business as a tutor to help make ends meet. “The kids make up for it,” Gallipeau said.

For one Charlotte mother, it will change her life after a long road of hurdles. The Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA) helps individuals from all income levels purchase homes. The program is now providing a path to homeownership for Samantha Leacock after years of challenges.

After Helene’s rains struck, Thomas Whiteside and his grandson watched a creek near their Black Mountain house rise hundreds of feet in minutes. Had they waited to evacuate, they would have been trapped inside when water reached the windows. Weeks later, Whiteside received a free, temporary shelter on his property from Cabins 4 Christ, a group created to help some of the many people made homeless by Helene.

Progressive think tank Carolina Forward proposed a “Middle-Class Housing Plan” featuring an innovative state-backed loan program to address North Carolina’s housing crisis. The plan suggests the state secure 75% of housing development loans, reducing financial risks for investors and developers. Theo Nollert of Carolina Forward explained the loan mechanism would function similarly to Small Business Administration loans, with an exceptionally low default rate of about 1-2%.

New research shows homeownership is becoming harder to achieve in the Charlotte region due to a lack of supply, which is driving up prices and interest rates. UNC Charlotte’s Childress Klein Center for Real Estate has released its annual “State of Housing” report. Yongqiang Chu, the lead researcher, said during a presentation on Wednesday the market has stabilized since the pandemic, but prices are still increasing due to demand.
