FORT ST. JOHN -- According to Northern Health, the rate of infectious syphilis cases is the highest in the Peace Region and the rest of the north is the highest in all of B.C. The health authority posted a statement saying they are seeing cases of syphilis in both men and women, and all sexual orientations, in the North. From 2021 to 2022, syphilis cases in the north increased by five times from 8.6 to 43.5 cases per 100,000. They say that the number is still increasing.

DAWSON CREEK -- The Dawson Creek RCMP says there has been a significant decrease in gun violence since significant police resources were sent to the city. They say there has been a decrease in violence among the groups responsible for the increase. There have also been no substantiated reports of shots fired or gun-related violence in and around Dawson Creek. On December 13, police resources from throughout the province were deployed to Dawson Creek.

FORT ST. JOHN -- The City of Fort St. John is hosting the annual New Year’s Eve Fireworks next week. They say the show will start at 8 p.m. so children and families can enjoy an early display. The show will be launched from the field northeast of the Fort St. John Hospital. While the launch area will be closed off to the public, residents can find a great viewing spot at one of these designated viewing locations.

DAWSON CREEK -- A Dawson Creek resident is urging Ottawa to put a stop to a so-called increase of crime in Northern B.C. According to Kaylee Lindberg, she reached out to local MP Bob Zimmer after reports of shots fired near the school she works at. Together, they have put forward a petition to the House of Commons. They are calling for a repeal of soft-on-crime and catch-and-release policies that they say have directly contributed to the rising rate of crime in Canada.

FORT ST. JOHN -- The Fort St. John RCMP are providing an update on the search of a suspicious vehicle. On Wednesday, Mounties asked for the public’s assistance in looking for information regarding a vehicle that’s believed to be related to a crime that happened in Fort St. John on December 12th. They say it’s related to a shooting last week. Fort St. John RCMP say they responded to a well-being check on December 12 and, once they arrived, they determined that a shooting had occurred.
