Appalachian State was a massive success story when it moved up to the FBS level. A powerhouse in the FCS, the Mountaineers hit the ground running when they entered the big leagues in 2014. It became routine to finish with a winning season and a bowl victory, going 6-0 in six straight post-season appearances. X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFNFrom Scott Satterfield, to a one-and-done-for-Missouri Eli Drinkwitz, to Shawn Clark, it was a fantastic first 11 seasons. How good was it?

Control games with the running game. It’ll be easy to keep throwing the ball with a quarterback like Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi, but Colorado State won when it ran effectively. It was 6-0 when running for more than 180 yards, and 7-1 when averaging 4.7 yards or more per carry. The Wisconsin offense can’t figure out what it wants to be. Under Luke Fickell, the devastating ground game that defined the program for decades fizzled, the attempts to crank up the fast-style passing attack flamed out, and now the O is just … pudding. Take out the shortened 2020 season, and the 271 points scored were the fewest by a Badger team since 2004, and that year was a bit by design - to be kind - on the way to a 9-0 start.

RUN … THE … (BLEEP)ING … BALLWisconsin not being able to run the ball is like Arby’s running out of roast beef. It can’t happen. Since Luke Fickell took over, the program has tried to pivot to more of a diverse attack, but a funny thing happened along the way. When the Badgers ran, they won. Over the last two seasons and the 2022 Guaranteed Rate Bowl win over Oklahoma State, Wisconsin was 12-0 when it ran for over 150 yards, and 1-13 when it didn’t. It was 13-1 when running 35 times or more.
