Counselling Directory

Our journey started in 2005 when sisters Aimi and Emma founded Counselling Directory. Having faced mental health challenges during their school and university years, they understood the feelings of being lost and uncertain. Their goal was to turn their personal experiences into a resource to assist others in connecting with counsellors and therapists for support.

Burnout It's finally here! Some extended decent weather. Update that wardrobe, book your mates in for lazy evenings down the pub, and make sure to book that holiday! You're tired. It's been a long winter, and perhaps now things are starting to feel on the up. Until... You start to fret about money. You realise you're counting down the days to the holiday. What are intrusive thoughts? So, what is an intrusive thought? Simply put, it is a thought that arrives out of nowhere and is unintentional – it just pops into your mind. Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) It often starts with a single thought. A flicker of fear that seems to come from nowhere, sending a jolt through your body. For some, it might be the fear of harming someone, despite knowing they never would. For others, it could be a gnawing doubt - Did I lock the door? Did I turn off the stove? The harder you try to push the thought away, the louder it returns, looping endlessly like a song stuck in your mind.

Back in July 2007, smoking was banned in the workplace and enclosed public spaces. This law is part of the Health Act 2006, which was established to introduce smoke-free environments for the benefit of all. Smoking accounts for more than one-third of respiratory deaths and around one-quarter of cancer deaths, so this law aims to benefit the life of the smoker and their colleagues in the workplace, to stop smoking altogether. It can be difficult to stop smoking, but the benefits are vast.

Now imagine you go to see a counsellor. You turn up at the counsellor's office, you tell them your symptoms, and you might expect them to tell you what to do, or what to take, to make your symptoms go away… “Do this, do that, follow my prescription and you will be cured”.  This is a fair assumption, and if it was that simple, I would write you a prescription in a heartbeat. Trust me when I say, I would love to wave my magic wand, and if I could, I would, but this is not within my power.
