A quantum random number generator developed in Spain is at the heart of a service being offered for free over the Internet. The Colorado University Randomness Beacon (CURBy) is broadcast free and can be used anywhere for a independent open source implementation of random numbers. Researchers at ICFO in Barcelona, Spain, worked with spinout QuSide to developed a fast quantum random number generators that is being used the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

The Spanish electricity operator Red Electrica (REE) is at odds with its government on the cause of the massive power outage that plunged most of the country into darkness in April. The Spanish government report ruled out a cyber attack as the cause but appears to blame the operator for miscalculating the amount of inertia required in the system to keep the voltage and frequency stable.

Swedish startup Embedl has raised €5.5 million to optimise generative AI for power and latency in embedded applications. The company is based on research by Professor Devdatt Dubashi of Chalmers University of Technology who has developed Model Optimization technology to help AI systems run efficiently on existing hardware, avoiding costly upgrades. The funding will be used to expand the Embedl Hub platform to help OEMs deploy generative AI models across multiple hardware platforms.

Texas Instruments (TI) has re-announced its plans to invest in seven semiconductor fabs in the US at an increased cost of $60bn. Like the recent announcement by Micron Technology for US memory fabs, the TI announcement covers existing investments in fabs. The investments in Richardson and Sherman, Texas as well as Lehi in Utah, are backed by $1.6bn of grants from the US government’s CHIPS Act, agreed in December 2024 before the Trump administration took over.
