Cook County’s ethics board fined Board of Review Commissioner Samantha Steele and aides for a series of breaches this week, finding that she provided confidential information to the press about the Chicago Bears’ Arlington Heights property and wrongly allowed a staffer to attend a conference on county time. A top Steele aide was separately fined for attending Cubs games and traveling for personal trips on county time.

A woman who pled guilty in a scheme to defraud the federal rental assistance program of a Merrillville-based not-for-profit agency has received probation. Along with 24 months of probation, Gloria White will be required to repay Geminus Corp. $177,800, United States District Court Judge Philip P. Simon ruled at her Thursday morning sentencing in Hammond. White, 60, who entered a plea in November, initially was facing 21 to 27 months in prison.

Gary Housing Authority Executive Director Taryl Bonds is apologizing for the situation in which he was charged with two counts of strangulation and two misdemeanor counts of domestic battery but claims the situation isn’t what it seems. Bonds on Wednesday issued a statement via email apologizing to the agency he leads. He was arrested June 20 for the incident.

Mourners, elected officials and police officers from across the state gathered in Forest Park Wednesday for the funeral of slain Chicago police Officer Krystal Rivera, the first CPD officer killed in the line of duty this year. Rivera, a CPD officer for four years, was assigned to a tactical team in the Gresham District (6th) when she was unintentionally killed by her partner which chasing a suspect. She is survived by her adolescent daughter.

After a year and a half without a permanent leader, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle has nominated a new head for the county’s Forest Preserves. On Wednesday, she named Adam Bianchi as her pick to become the district’s new superintendent. Her choice will face a vote from the Forest Preserves board — which has the same members as the Cook County board — next week.
