Firefighters rescued several animals while extinguishing a fire that caused $500,000 in damage and left residents displaced from two townhomes in Volo Monday evening. The Wauconda Fire District responded around 7:05 p.m. Monday to the 1100 block of Piccolo Lane in Volo for a report of a structure fire. Firefighters arrived in two and a half minutes and found an active deck fire, according to Wauconda Fire District Battalion Chief Jason Daun.

Famed Lake County Sheriff’s Canine Dax, who died following a career-ending injury, was honored over the weekend in Washington D.C. where his name was etched into a canine memorial. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that Canine Dax was honored in Washington D.C. as a fallen canine hero during the National Law Enforcement Memorial events. Dax “courageously served” with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office alongside his handler, Deputy John Forlenza, for almost a decade.

A jury found a convicted felon guilty of shooting a gun in the direction of a family amusement center in Waukegan after a physical fight broke out in the establishment. Demonshea Davidson, 32, of Beach Park, was convicted of armed habitual criminal, aggravated discharge of a firearm, felon in possession of a firearm enhanced and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon enhanced. A Lake County jury returned the guilty verdicts on Thursday following a four-day trial.

Fire officials said Monday that an investigation continues into what caused a house explosion and fire that left a man in critical condition near Cary Sunday afternoon. The Cary Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 1:32 p.m. Sunday to the 6700 block of Pheasant Trail in unincorporated Cary for a report of a structure fire and explosion.

Police announced murder charges against a suspect who they say fatally shot a 22-year-old man, who was a Southern Illinois University student, in Gurnee in 2021. Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli said a vehicle showed up at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan around 12:05 a.m. on November 20, 2021. The driver of the vehicle drove to the hospital to seek medical attention for his passenger, identified as Daniel F. Lobo, 22, of Waukegan, who had been shot.
