Las Vegas Weekly

Las Vegas Weekly

Las Vegas Weekly is a no-cost alternative weekly newspaper located in Henderson, Nevada, that focuses on the arts, entertainment, culture, and news in Las Vegas. It is published by Greenspun Media Group. The publication began in 1992, created by James P. Reza, Greg Ryan, and Robert Ringle, originally as a monthly magazine called Scope Magazine. This magazine highlighted the culture, arts, music, and lifestyle of Southern Nevada from a Generation X viewpoint. The first issue of Scope was released in April 1992. In 1996, Reza teamed up with Daniel Greenspun to establish Radiant City Publications LLC, which took over the publication of Scope. During this time, Reza served as Managing Editor and shifted the magazine's format to resemble a traditional alternative newsweekly, increasing its frequency to biweekly. In 1998, Reza sold his remaining stake in Scope to The Greenspun Corporation, which revamped the publication and rebranded it as Las Vegas Weekly. By December 2009, the circulation of Las Vegas Weekly reached 65,000.

The Helldorado Days Parade, the only parade produced by the City of Las Vegas and one of the most prominent connections to the city’s western roots and culture, originated 90 years ago.

If you’re into music, there’s a good chance Babyface has either written or produced some of your favorite songs. The 13-time Grammy-winning producer and singer-songwriter has cranked out hits for everyone from Boyz II Men and Whitney Houston to SZA and Ariana Grande. He’s also widely recognized for making his own chart-busting ballads. “I have younger artists and rappers still reaching out to me to work with them,” Babyface tells the Weekly.

When Las Vegas Brewing Company made its debut in the northwest valley in 2022 (in the former space of Tenaya Creek Brewery), it quickly established a true dedication to the best brews and pub grub. When it expanded last year with a tap room in a prime Arts District location, it made sense to establish a slightly different identity—same quality, altered personality.

It’s a Sunday night at Rangel Boxing gym. The lingering scent of sweat mingles with cigarette smoke from the parking lot and the buzz of anticipation. Teenagers, some barely old enough to drive, gather by the propped doors, eager for the first notes to ring out from a boxing ring that, tonight, doubles as a stage. This is the evolving face of the Las Vegas all-ages music scene, where kids pile into makeshift sanctuaries to hear live music.

I admit something to Nevada Shakespeare Festival artistic director Matthew Morgan that makes me feel like a plebeian—I’ve never read Hamlet. “Attagirl,” he says. “Don’t read it. Come without it. Just come and be a novice. Let’s see how it hits.” The nonprofit is staging the 17th-century tragedy at Henderson’s Cornerstone Park May 8-17. As part of its mission to make Shakespeare “digestible,” NSF has given this production a trailer park twist. “We’re really building out what feels like a trailer park.
