LEXINGTON — Owen Prince’s primary focus this season is finding ways to get on base. The VMI center fielder prefers getting base hits, but he’s grown to appreciate drawing walks and occasionally getting hit by a pitch to give him an opportunity to create chaos on the basepaths. The approach has allowed Prince, in his first season as the Keydets’ leadoff hitter, to become one of the nation’s best base stealers.

Hanover’s school board has finally agreed on a redistricting plan to ease the stress on bulging class sizes in some areas of the county. The plan will ultimately shift more than 1,200 kids between elementary, middle and high schools in the county. About 237 students will move out of Cool Spring Elementary School, which is at 110% capacity. Parents at the school spoke out last year when they found that space was at such a premium, auxiliary rooms had to be converted into class space.

Richmond’s City Council has approved a permit to redevelop the building that houses the Westhampton Pastry Shop at the intersection of Patterson and Libbie avenues in the city’s West End. The bakery opened in the one-story building at 5728 Patterson Ave. in 1952. Now, the landlord plans to replace it with a four-story building with commercial space on the ground floor and offices above. It’s unclear what will happen to the Westhampton Pastry Shop.

Virginia Commonwealth University will start renting out the Siegel Center for concerts and events in an effort to generate revenue for athletes. VCU has partnered with a California-based event management company, ASM Global to manage the facility. The university expects to spend $5 million compensating its athletes beginning next year. For the first time, colleges will be able to directly and legally pay their players, pending final approval of a lawsuit against the NCAA.
