The Houston Rockets will not sweep the 2024-25 NBA season's individual awards. There's no MVP candidate on this roster. Alperen Sengun has an outside shot at making the All-NBA Third Team, but it doesn't feel likely. There's no Most Improved Player candidate, and Amen Thompson has started too often to factor into the Sixth Man of the Year race. Speaking of Thompson... Amen Thompson should make an All-Defensive team That's right. Let's start with Defensive Box Plus/Minus (DBPM).

Alternate title: SpaceCityScoop author completely contradicts himselfThe Houston Rockets have surpassed expectations in 2024-25. Fine - that's an understatement. The Rockets are running laps around their preseason projections. They're one of the best teams in the NBA, and nobody saw that coming. With that success comes scrutiny. Last year, nobody cared about the Rockets' short-term decisions. Now, everyone's got a diagnosis.

The Houston Rockets landed a star player in the 2021 NBA Draft. They didn't do it with the second overall pick. Forgive me if I'm overly cynical, but it's hard to imagine Jalen Green achieving NBA stardom at this point. He is, to borrow from the Hot Hot Heat, consistently inconsistent. In the aggregate, the result is consistently poor. This piece isn't about Green. It's about the aforementioned star.

The Houston Rockets have gotten very little from Jalen Green in 2024-25. The Houston Rockets are 13-6. Sometimes, life is funny. The prevailing assumption has been that for the Rockets to progress, Green would have to lead the charge. Alperen Sengun has been producing like a star. The Rockets knew they had a dynamic wing rotation. They've been a star guard away from a playoff appearance. Well, the Rockets didn't get their star guard. They're distinctly on pace to make the playoffs anyway.

The Houston Rockets will probably trade for a star eventually. Fans don't want to hear it. They've already got their core. To be sure, the Rockets have done an outstanding job of collecting dynamic young players. Perhaps they've done too well. The Rockets have to consolidate eventually. There is no such thing as a "core seven." None of these guys will be content to be the best seventh man in the NBA, and the Rockets won't look to pay seven good players.
