City hosts first ‘Around the World’ festival

The aroma of pho, tacos and gyros wafts from food trucks as people of various ages gather outside the Lucie Stern Community Center, drawn in by colorful booths and vibrant traditional outfits awaiting inside. Yesterday, Palo Alto’s Community Services Department kicked off its first-ever Around the World in a Day Festival, celebrating the city’s diverse cultures.
PAUSD board member Rowena Chiu asked to resign

Palo Alto Unified School District board member Rowena Chiu received condemnation and calls to resign from the Palo Alto Management Association and former PAUSD trustees after she reposted and commented on an X post on Monday. PAMA released a document stating: “Given the gravity of Ms. Chiu’s actions and the harm they caused, we demand her immediate resignation from the PAUSD Board of Education.” Another statement, a letter signed by 14 former PAUSD board trustees, also criticized Chiu’s actions.
PAEA emergency meeting tonight

The PAEA meeting follows a series of interactions starting at last week’s board discussion about a proposed ethnic studies requirement, which passed that night.
Palo Alto Management Association speaks out against board trustee

Over sixty members of the Palo Alto Management Association released a letter this morning to the Palo Alto Unified School District Board of Education calling for the “immediate resignation” of board trustee Rowena Chiu. According to a memorandum of understanding published by the district, PAMA includes all certified district employees (except those who have individual contracts), all psychologists, and all classified management employees.
Boys’ basketball first in league after defeating Trojans

In a battle for first place in the De Anza League, the Palo Alto High School Vikings (14-2) defeated the Milpitas Trojans (13-3), 44-37, in a tight game decided in the final quarter Wednesday night at Palo Alto High School. According to Viking head coach Jeff LaMere, the Trojans have a history of being a strong defensive team. “Their [Trojan] defense is what it has been for the last few years,” LaMere said. “It’s hard to simulate it in practice, and they don’t let you make passes at all.
Boys’ basketball defeat Gunn Titans in rivalry match

In a fierce back -and- forth game, the Palo Alto High School Vikings (11-2) snagged a victory from their rivals, the Gunn Titans (5-7), winning 63-50 Saturday night at Gunn High School. According to Viking assistant coach Jim Bitler, the team emphasized playing together in order to achieve victory. “Gunn brings it every year against us, so we had to come in here together as a unit and try to come up with a win,” Bitler said.
Palo Alto celebrates Lunar New Year with performances

With traditional Chinese opera reverberating across the room and lions weaving energetically through the crowd, the Palo Alto community welcomed the Year of the Snake yesterday at Palo Alto’s Mitchell Park Community Center. Hosting over 500 people of all ages, the event’s goal was to celebrate the different cultures across town, according to event coordinator Alicia Hulten.
Paly alum’s documentary earns Oscar nod, in theaters tomorrow

“The human spirit is able to be creative even when it seems that all hope is lost.”Palo Alto High School alum Brendan Bellomo’s award-winning documentary, shortlisted for an Oscar in the Best Documentary Feature category, opens to Bay Area audiences this Friday. The film titled “Porcelain War” was awarded the 2024 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize earlier last year.
Boys basketball blows out Firebirds

In a game marked by commanding defense and efficient scoring, the Palo Alto High School boys basketball team (4-1) dominated the Fremont High School Firebirds (3-4), 68-37, Monday night. According to Viking senior forward Jorell Clark, the team entered the game determined to avoid surprises. “We’re probably the better team going into it, but we still can’t take any team easy because that can lead to disaster,” Clark said.
Pocket poetry promotes sharing personal perspectives

With students reading aloud their bite-sized poetry and cheering on their peers, the student center buzzed with life at the annual poetry-reading event last Thursday at Palo Alto High School. Hosted by the Writer’s Craft students, the event attracted around 30 students to both recite poems and listen as audience. Students were given a slip of paper with a short poem to keep for themselves or share with the open mic. Writer’s Craft students leading the event also hosted a Books Inc.
