BIG RAPIDS - In honor of National Youth Week, the Big Rapids Elks Lodge No. 974 awarded scholarships to local students Tuesday, May 6. Kailyn Smoes, of Reed City, received a Most Valuable Student Scholarship from the Michigan Elks, while Hadley Fox, of Big Rapids, received the ELKS Lodge Memorial Scholarship. The Elks also awarded the Outstanding Student Award to Ty Gielczyk, Somiyah Nelson, Bobir Siddikov, Mariah Farrell, El Cour, Alannah Bentley, and August Rohde.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate on Tuesday easily confirmed Troy Meink as the secretary of the Air Force, putting a former KC-135 tanker aircraft navigator and space expert in charge of the service. Meink has almost four decades of experience in the military and in government, including managing some of the nation's most sensitive satellite intelligence capabilities and the military's space portfolio. He previously served as a deputy of the National Reconnaissance Office.
