Southeast of Tracy, strong winds caused George Finck's mill to collapse. Meanwhile, in town, G.A.D. Buschke's 14-month-old son, who had been critically ill, is now safe and recovering. These stories were reported on April 2, 1898, in the Tracy Press, marking the start of a long history of news coverage. An original copy of that first issue can be found in the Tracy Historical Museum. The inaugural edition was released as a weekly publication, featuring a mix of world and national news updates, fictional tales, and a column called "The Fair Sex," which provided housekeeping advice for women readers. The paper was launched by Thomas Duffy after several other local weeklies, including the Tracy News, Tracy Exponent, and Tracy Times, had ceased operations.
