WAUSAU, Wi. (WAOW) — A new dog is walking the halls at Wausau East High School. Wausau Police Department School Resource Officer Nick Stetzer and his dog Timber are a package deal, working towards creating a safe and comforting environment for students and staff at the high school. "Ever since school started she has really hit the ground running," Stetzer said. Their day is filled with more than just belly but strengthening relationships in the school building.

Surgeon General calls parental mental health a public health concern

WAUSAU (WAOW) — The U.S. Surgeon General released an advisory about parental mental health saying most parents are struggling. According to the report, 33% of parents reported high levels of stress in the past month, compared to 20% of other adults. Parents and caregivers are dealing with stressors, including - financial strain, children's health, social media and parental isolation. "There is this myth of individualism," said Maggi Rocha, LCSW, Behavioral Health Clinic.
Crisis prevention signs placed on Bridge Street bridge

WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) — City leaders have installed crisis prevention signs on the Bridge Street bridge. According to the Marathon County Suicide and Death Review Team, there have been 12 suicide deaths by jumping from a height from 2017-2022. Recently it was recommended the team put up signs providing resources to those in crisis. Each sign has words of encouragement and the 988 crisis line phone number. Jared Thompson with the Wausau Fire Department is an advocate for suicide prevention.
Merrill Fire Department receives $50,000 from state program

MERRILL, Wis. (WAOW) — The Merrill Fire Department received more than $50,000 in funding on Tuesday. The funding comes from the state's 2% fire dues program. According to Fire Chief Josh Klug, a portion of the money will go towards funding the department's part-time fire inspector position. The position was created back in 2021, and has made a positive impact on the community since then.
Phelps gym teacher fundraising for school bikes

PHELPS, Wis. (WAOW)-- A Northwoods gym teacher is fundraising to make sure his students have access to healthy activities. Brandon Sharpe wants to share his love of biking with his kindergarten and 4K students at Phelps Elementary School. His goal is to get at least 20 bicycles, helmets and learning materials for the program. Sharpe is working with All Kids Bike to get the program off the ground. Since launching the fundraiser, the school has raised several hundred dollars.

Monday was the annual Wave Party at Whitman's Bar and Grill in Hazelhurst. With each wave and honk, everyone is saying, thank you and come again. "Yeah, it's a thrill to be able to be at the wave party. They have great music and corn on the cob," Carol Dane, wave party participant, said. Dane has a special relationship with the party.

Severe weather impacting blood supply

WISCONSIN (WAOW) — The high temperature and severe weather seen across the county are affecting the the American Red Cross blood supply. The nonprofit reports the severe weather across the country has led to the cancellation of nearly 60 donation events. In Wisconsin, 36 donation events have been canceled this year. "At one point in July, nearly 50 percent of Americans were under heat alerts," Mary Jane Thomsen, Executive Director of the Northwest Wisconsin Chapter of the American Red Cross, said.
