AbstractHere we report the largest Asian genome-wide association study (GWAS) for systemic sclerosis performed to date, based on data from Japanese subjects and comprising of 1428 cases and 112,599 controls. The lead SNP is in the FCGR/FCRL region, which shows a penetrating association in the Asian population, while a complete linkage disequilibrium SNP, rs10917688, is found in a cis-regulatory element for IRF8.

1 IntroductionAging is a complex process that is characterized by a decline in physiological function and integrity. It involves macromolecular damage, impaired tissue renewal, and altered cellular signaling. This leads to tissue dysfunction, organ failure, and mortality (López-Otín et al., 2013; Zhang et al., 2015; Singh et al., 2019). Interestingly, skin aging can influence the aging phenotype in other organs.

1 BACKGROUND The complete range of ultraviolet (UV) rays is composed of UVC (100–290 nm), UVB (290–320 nm) and UVA wavelengths (320–400 nm) that include UVA2 or shortwave UVA (320–340 nm) and UVA1 or longwave UVA (340–400 nm). UVA1 rays account for more than 80% of the solar UV reaching the earth.1, 2 Less energetic than UVB or UVA2, UVA1 rays have a higher skin penetration potential and produce effects in all cutaneous layers.
