Five days without power, Arlington farmer Lonnie Tourek could see the commotion from his backyard. About a dozen utility workers were untangling the mess left by the recent blizzard, now the fifth hardest-hitting storm to OPPD customers — the second-worst winter event only behind the October 1997 snowstorm, according to the utility.Tourek has been powering his home with a decades-old generator outside his home ever since the storm passed Wednesday last week.

Western Iowa counties have opened warming centers and served food to hundreds too cold to stay home as thousands wait for power in freezing temperatures. MidAmerican Energy says Wednesday's blizzard tore down dozens of utility poles outside Blencoe. Company and contractor crews continue to shift resources to areas of greatest impact to restore most customers by the end of the day March 20, according to the utility. Coordination with road plows have opened access to previously impassable areas.
