Fishing boat runs agroundA 40-foot commercial fishing boat ran aground near Ventura Harbor on May 25. The incident happened shortly after 12:30 p.m. near the mouth of the Santa Clara River. Fortunately, the three people on board were successfully rescued. Officials with the Ventura Harbor Patrol said the vessel was considered a salvage operation and was handed over to TowBoatUS Ventura for recovery later that afternoon.

Oxnard’s historic Japanese Cemetery, established in 1908, was designated Ventura County Landmark No. 18 in 1971 by the Ventura County Cultural Heritage Board (CHB), which decades later has bestowed a new honor on the people who care for the sacred space. The Ventura County chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) won a 2025 Historic Preservation Award during a May 12 ceremony at the Ventura County Government Center.

On May 19, 2015, the Refugio oil spill erupted from a corroded pipeline near the 101 Freeway into a drainage culvert, covering Refugio State Beach and wildlife in thick crude oil. More than 120,000 gallons contaminated the biologically rich waters of the Santa Barbara Channel, fouling shorelines in Ventura County and as far south as Redondo Beach.
