The recent cuts should save CSUCI about $10.4 million in the coming year, university leaders said. More cuts could be necessary, because CSUCI is projecting a deficit of $14 million. The Trump administration has recently cancelled more than $2.6 billion in scientific research grants to U.S. universities, including two grants to CSU Channel Islands. CSUCI officials believe their grants were cancelled because they were part of an "equity in STEM" division within the NSF, meant to help Latinos and others succeed in science fields. One of the cancelled grants has paid for 324 CSUCI undergraduates to do scientific research over the past five years.
