The recent cuts should save CSUCI about $10.4 million in the coming year, university leaders said. More cuts could be necessary, because CSUCI is projecting a deficit of $14 million. The main reason the university is struggling financially is because its enrollment is declining. CSU Channel Islands laid off 13 people, part of a larger reduction in its workforce as the university tries to balance its budget in the face of declining student enrollment and likely cuts in state funding.

The development team has conducted soil studies and a radar scan to try to figure out why the shoring collapsed. Results are expected soon. Two nearby buildings have been red-tagged by the city, which means they're not considered safe to enter. The Trump administration has recently cancelled more than $2.6 billion in scientific research grants to U.S. universities, including two grants to CSU Channel Islands. CSUCI officials believe their grants were cancelled because they were part of an "equity in STEM" division within the NSF, meant to help Latinos and others succeed in science fields. One of the cancelled grants has paid for 324 CSUCI undergraduates to do scientific research over the past five years.
