Ever since equine veterinarian Lori Bidwell, DVM, DACVAA, CVA, was a little girl growing up on a farm in Grand Rapids, Michigan, horse welfare has been her No. 1 priority. “Now there’s a sign hanging in my office that says, ‘We do this because we love horses,’ ” Bidwell said. “I think it’s important to remind people of that every day.” She and her husband, Duncan Peters, DVM, MS, DACVSMR, have created their entire lifestyle around that philosophy.

However, I split my time between Grady and the Terry College of Business, as I am pursuing a general business minor and entrepreneurship certificate. The U.S. Hunter Jumper Association this week announced the candidates who will be on the ballot for the USHJA board of directors election during the USHJA Annual Meeting, to be held Dec. 9-12 in Tucson, Arizona. The board will vote on the officer position of national vice president and four at-large director seats, including one meeting the criteria for the amateur seat and one meeting the criteria for the competition manager seat, on Dec. 9.

Stephanie Danhakl remembers her 35th birthday well, and not just because it was the first one she was celebrating after giving birth to her son, Miles Raymond. Instead, the date—Jan. 26, 2022—is seared in her memory because of a phone call from her veterinarian. “I was at the table, my parents were in town because they were visiting the new baby, and the vet called me and said, ‘I’m sorry, Stephanie, but you need to put your horse down,’ ” she recalled.

The U.S. Dressage Finals return to the Kentucky Horse Park this week, where amateurs, juniors and professionals will be vying for 37 championship titles, from training level through Grand Prix, and more than $125,000 in prize money. Riders have qualified via their GAIG/U.S. Dressage Federation Regional Championships and with wild cards for the chance to compete. The USDF Fall Classic also runs alongside the finals.
