I need security cameras, I thought, peering into the depths of the partially frozen, 100-gallon trough in my front pasture. My phone glowed eerily from the bottom, a sad little submarine. It’s a real shame no one else gets to see this. Just before dusk, I’d set out to check the troughs in each of the three pastures on my little 10-acre farm just north of Pittsburgh.

Let’s make a slightly delayed New Year’s resolution, horse professionals: 2025 is going to be the year that you look at your savings and retirement plans, or lack thereof, and put some actual plans in place. I know, I know, horse people never retire, we just subsist on coffee and ibuprofen and yell, “half HALT!” louder and louder. But just imagine for a moment that you made plans and saved and could decide whether or not you’d like to have a different life at some point in the future.

Nearly three years ago, Sara Kozumplik got a call from her friend and fellow eventer Nilson Moreira Da Silva that his four-star mount, Rock Phantom, was for sale. Kozumplik had always liked the striking bay Irish Sport Horse gelding (Spirit House—Ballycroy Rose, Clonakilty Hero) bred by Maura O’Malley, and Da Silva wondered if she knew someone who might be interested in him.

It’s not exactly a new experience for seven-time Olympian Phillip Dutton to win an upper-level event, but the CCI4*-S at TerraNova—which served as the third qualifier in the inaugural year of the US Equestrian Open series—was a big day, even for him. Dutton won with Azure, and he also took second on Quasi Cool, giving him an early lead in the series, which builds toward a fall 2025 final offering $250,000 in total prize money.
