LAS CRUCES — An unidentified man is dead and another injured after being shot by Las Cruces police Thursday morning. The shooting took place on Walnut Street, across from Lynn Community Middle School, close to the location of the March 21 Young Park shooting but not apparently related to that incident. Details on what took place are scarce as the Las Cruces Police Department and a multiagency officer-involved incident task force begin the first stages of an investigation.

On Feb. 28, Homeland Security Investigations officers executed search warrants at the southern New Mexico home of judge Joel Cano and his wife, Nancy; and next door at the home of their adult daughter. The agents arrested three Venezuelan migrants who had been living in a casita on the Canos’ property. Federal agents returned on April 24, this time arresting Joel and Nancy Cano on evidence-tampering and conspiracy charges.

The vehicle transporting two Marines killed in an April 14 vehicle crash in Santa Teresa drove off the roadway to avoid a head-on collision, according to newly released police reports and 911 recordings. Lance Cpls. Albert Aguilera, 22, and Marcelino Gamino, 28, both California residents deployed from Camp Pendleton with the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, were killed in the crash.

LAS CRUCES — Federal dollars originally intended to aid recovery from the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have been used in Las Cruces since 2023 to help small businesses repair damage from property crimes such as vandalism. With American Rescue Plan Act dollars still unspent, the Las Cruces City Council voted Monday to double the individual grant awards available for applicants and to lift a limit on how many times business owners may apply.
