The Texas Division of Emergency Management deployed resources from the State of Texas Incident Management Team to help with logistics and planning, as well as Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service Swiftwater Rescue Boat Squads. Abbott also deployed Texas resources to New Mexico last week.

    LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KVIA) -- Fire departments across Dona Ana County are set to start operating their own emergency medical services soon. The departments are taking over this responsibility because the current contract with American Medical Responses (AMR) is ending soon. AMR requested $5,230,000 to continue services for the upcoming year. The City of Las Cruces declined, and AMR therefore initiated a 120-day notice of termination.

    EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 1481, which requires public schools in Texas to adopt policies prohibiting student use of personal communication devices during the school day. Abbott signed the bill on Friday, along with 306 others passed during the 89th Regular Legislative Session. The Governor's Office provided the following explanations of some of the other bills Abbott signed last week.

    EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The El Paso Fire Department search and rescue crew is helping a hiker down the Franklin Mountains. Fire department officials say that crews just made contact with the hiker, who is located near the tramway. The crew started up the mountain near the 2800 block of Gunnison Drive in northeast El Paso. They initiated the rescue this afternoon. Fire department officials have not yet provided details on the hiker's condition.

    LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KVIA) -- NMSU will offer a Bachelor of Science in artificial intelligence starting Fall 2026. University officials call this the first degree of its kind in New Mexico. The New Mexico Higher Education Department and the Higher Learning Commission approved the degree earlier this year. University officials say President Valerio Ferme championed the creation of NMSU’s Institute for Applied Practice in AI and Machine Learning.
