Lorain native Naz Bohannon is focused on making an impact in Lorain County —even while building his professional basketball career overseas. A 2017 graduate of Lorain High School, Bohannon played college basketball at Youngstown State and Clemson before signing with Phoenix Hagen of the German ProA league in July 2023. Since joining the team, he has already earned a championship and all-league recognition.

The Mexican Mutual Society ushered in a new court of Mexican princesses and queens during its annual pageant. The May 3 event followed the Cinco de Mayo parade in Lorain and marked the second pageant since the historic Lorain social club reinstated the tradition after the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s coronation was part of Mexican Mutual Society’s broader Cinco de Mayo celebration that included traditional music, food and family activities.

Pathways Enrichment Center, 2505 Leavitt Road in Lorain, celebrated in April with a series of programs designed to educate and empower the community. Throughout the month, Pathways hosted events featuring health professionals from Lorain County who addressed critical health issues impacting minority populations. Pathways Executive Director Britney Hopkins emphasized that health education has always been central to the organization’s mission.

The Lorain County Urban League, in partnership with the National Urban League, has launched The Urban Expungement Program (UEP), a new initiative designed to provide record relief and offer individuals a fresh start. Anthony Body, program supervisor for the Lorain County Urban League, described the effort as an “agent of change” and emphasized the importance of giving people a fresh start.

RE/MAX Above and Beyond is on a mission to beautify Lorain, starting with its own building. The real estate “community hub,” as agent Jacki Jakacki calls it, recently unveiled a new mural on the back of its building at 404 Broadway in downtown Lorain. Jakacki purchased the building two years ago with a vision for community growth. Before the mural, the back wall was covered in graffiti and hate speech, she said.
