Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich announced in a press release May 12 that 44-year-old Jeffery Peasley was sentenced to life in prison for the 2021 murder of 49-year-old Robert Zornes Jr.Peasley will be eligible for parole consideration after 26 years.

A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for aggravated vehicular assault after causing a serious collision in August 2020, according to a press release from Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich's office. Derrell Vanhorn was travelling at a high speed rate and ran a stop sign when he hit another car, pushing it into a house on the corner and totaling both vehicles, the release said. Three people were injured, two of which sustained severe injuries.

Community members joined the Akron Innerbelt Master Plan team for an open community meal and conversation to discuss Akron history and the Innerbelt. "Patience, learning, hope" were some responses from Akron residents when community coordinator Ebony Hill asked why they were attending. Around 20 residents attended the May 8 meeting at Reach Opportunity Center at Summit Lake to get a better understanding of what could happen to land from the decommissioned Innerbelt and the corridor.

One person is dead after a wall collapsed in the White Pond Reserve development under construction in West Akron, authorities confirmed this afternoon. There did not appear to be any other injuries, they said. Lt. Michael Murphy Jr., public information officer for the Akron Police Department, said "our hearts go out" to those affected by what appeared to be an accident at the site. The Summit County Medical Examiner's office said it has investigators at the scene. This is a developing story.

Jhovonne Taylor never had the chance to see her youngest daughter walk across the stage in a cap and gown to collect her high school diploma. It's been almost five years since Ty'Leia Junius was fatally shot at age 14 when she got caught in the crossfire during a neighborhood dispute. "I've been fighting through life, trying to live the best way I know how," Taylor said. "My son was 11 when she was murdered in front of him."Ty'Leia, whose nickname was "Cupcake," also left behind two older sisters.
