SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Mote Marine Aquarium announced last week its City Island location will close to the public after July 6. On July 7, staff will begin to prepare for the opening of Mote Science Education Aquarium or Mote SEA. The new aquarium at Nathan Benderson Park has been under construction since 2020, but is nearing completion. “It is moving along great and I go out there about once a week and every day I go out there it is different and better,” said Mote CEO Dr. Michael Crosby.

SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Sarasota County Schools hosted a groundbreaking celebration Tuesday for what will soon be the new Garden Elementary School. The 130,000-square-foot facility will have updated play areas, secure fencing, and modern classrooms with space to accommodate about 200 additional students. It will also feature a new car loop aimed at improving traffic flow. It is designed to hold 142 cars at once. Crews are already on site prepping the property for construction to begin.

LONGBOAT KEY, Fla. (WFLA) — Driving through the town of Longboat Key, you won’t see power lines or utility poles any longer. After years of work, the island town celebrated the removal of its last utility pole in a ceremony Monday. Mayor Kenneth Schneier said talks of bringing utilities underground first started about 33 years ago, but at the time it was too pricey. After the devastating hurricane season in 2004, talks about it become more serious.

SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, 911 calls started pouring in from beachgoers at South Lido Beach. “You guys need to get out here ASAP,” said one caller. “We saw the two jet skis hit each other, they collided, and the guy, he is unresponsive,” said another. Some callers described it as a head-on collision, while others said one jet ski “ran over” the other.
