    HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - The Housing Development Alliance is continuing its summer internship program. This year, the program was renamed the Sam Smith Memorial Internship. It is in honor of 2023 summer inter Sam Smith who died in 2024. Smith was in the foster care system, completed the internship, and was hired on as a full-time carpenter. HDA Executive Director Scott McReynolds said the name change is to remember Smith and to give a chance to kids who grew up in the foster care system.

    PERRY COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - April is national distracted driving awareness month. Kentucky State Police troopers continue to urge the importance of driving safe and wearing your seatbelt. More details on WYMT Mountain News at 6 p.m.KSP Trooper Matt Gayheart went to Robimson Elementary School for a rollover simulator. He said it is important to show students why they should buckle up as a passenger and encourage their parents to do the same.

    HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - April marks Distracted Driving Awareness Month. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,275 people died from driving while distracted in 2023. Kentucky State Police Post 13 Public Affairs Officer Matt Gayheart said driving while distracted is always dangerous.

    HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Health professionals in Eastern Kentucky are weighing in following a second measles related death, according to CBS News. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of April 3, there were 607 confirmed cases of the measles in 22 jurisdictions, including Kentucky. Family Nurse Practitioner Donald McPherson said measles is high contagious and spreads through the air. He said symptoms include cough, fever, runny nose, and a rash.

    HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - No injures were reported after an apartment fire in Hazard on Saturday. The Hazard Fire Department said they were called to the 2500 block of North Main Street at approximately 2:53 p.m. in regards to the fire. Hazard Fire Chief Robert Keith said eight people were in the apartment, two of them children. The families two cats died in the fire. Keith said when firefighters arrived they were met with heavy smoke coming from the back of the apartment.
