May 5 is now recognized as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Day following a proclamation delivered by Attorney General Marty Jackley at the second annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous People's conference in Rapid City. "MMIP has been a longstanding crisis in South Dakota," Jackley read from the proclamation. "Indigenous women, men and children (are) disproportionately affected by violence, abduction and homicide.

One in four Indigenous South Dakotans report experiencing sexual violence in their lifetimes, according to the state Department of Health. An Indigenous-led organization on Pine Ridge works to end the problem but is losing millions because of federal funding cuts. Peaceful Means has provided service to more than 1,000 Indigenous youths on the Pine Ridge Reservation through self-defense courses, educational programming and support services.
