South Dakota sees two more measles cases

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - The South Dakota Department of Health is reporting two more cases of the measles, bringing the total up to four now. They say the person in one of those new cases was in the Rapid City Medical Center Urgent Care waiting room on Mount Rushmore Road a week ago Tuesday, on June 10th, from 9:00am to 11:30am in the morning. If you were there during that time, you are asked to monitor for symptoms for 21 days after that exposure date.
Update on Highway 385 shooting

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office is releasing more details about a fatal shooting that happened last Thursday along Highway 385. The Sheriff’s office says the shooting stemmed from a physical fight between four men, all from Iowa and Nebraska, at a rental cabin. They say a 9 millimeter pistol was discharged during the fight, hitting and killing 59 year old Larry Petersen from Audubon, Iowa. There’s still no word on whether there’s been an arrest.
Two longtime local legislators die

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - The Black Hills is mourning the passing of two long-time local legislators. Lyndell Petersen passed away Tuesday at the age of 93. Petersen served in the South Dakota State Senate from 1977 to 1994. He was a Pennington County Commissioner from 2011 to 2016. Peterson was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2019.
Spearfish man pleads guilty in 2024 death

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - A Spearfish man pleaded guilty Tuesday in Fourth Circuit Court in the drug overdose death of another man in June of last year. Originally charged with second degree murder, Dan Lee Snyder pleaded guilty to distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death and ingestion of a controlled substance with the murder charge being dropped.
Rapid City women sentenced to 12 years in prison after death of son

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - A Rapid City woman is sentenced to 12 years in prison Monday after the death of her 18 year old quadriplegic son. 40 year old Naomia Prairie pleaded guilty in April to child abuse and abuse or neglect of a disabled adult. Prosecutors said at the time of his death, Donny Merrival weighed just over 80 pounds and died of extreme neglect while in Prairie’s care.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office says an Oglala Sioux Tribe police officer was justified in firing three shots at a vehicle in Fall River County in a pursuit that started on the Pine Ridge Reservation on May 2nd. In that report, Attorney General Marty Jackley says it was reasonable force because lives were in danger.
Judge bars DHS from deporting former Mines graduate student

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - A federal judge grants a preliminary injunction for a former South Dakota Mines student from India who was fighting the cancellation of her student visa status so she could stay in the country. District Judge Karen Schreier filed that order Thursday in the case of Priya Saxena. The process was triggered by a misdemeanor traffic charge against Saxena in 2021.
Rising Star Scholarship Contest prizes awarded

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - This is one of our favorite days of the year, when we hand out the prizes for our Rising Star of the West Scholarship Contest. We announced the winners Tuesday and they’re splitting up a total of $7,500 in scholarships from KOTA Territory and Monument Health. Custer High School senior Quinn Lewison was picked as this year’s winner by a combination of the scores of our KOTA Territory panel and your scores online. That earns Quinn a $4,000 scholarship.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Custer High School senior Quinn Lewison is the winner of the 19th annual Rising Star of the West scholarship contest sponsored by KOTA Territory and Monument Health. The four finalists in this year’s contest each delivered four on-air commentaries which were rated by both on-line viewers and a KOTA Territory panel. Lewison was picked as this year’s best by a combination of those groups. She receives a $4,000 college scholarship.
DCI investigating officer involved shooting in Fall River County

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - The search is on in Nebraska for a suspect after an officer involved shooting today in Fall River County. The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office says it started with a vehicle pursuit on the Pine Ridge Reservation that went into Fall River County. Shots were fired by Oglala Sioux Tribal Police and the A-G’s office says one person received non-life threatening injuries. They say no officers were injured.
