RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - The South Dakota Department of Health is reporting two more cases of the measles, bringing the total up to four now. They say the person in one of those new cases was in the Rapid City Medical Center Urgent Care waiting room on Mount Rushmore Road a week ago Tuesday, on June 10th, from 9:00am to 11:30am in the morning. If you were there during that time, you are asked to monitor for symptoms for 21 days after that exposure date.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office is releasing more details about a fatal shooting that happened last Thursday along Highway 385. The Sheriff’s office says the shooting stemmed from a physical fight between four men, all from Iowa and Nebraska, at a rental cabin. They say a 9 millimeter pistol was discharged during the fight, hitting and killing 59 year old Larry Petersen from Audubon, Iowa. There’s still no word on whether there’s been an arrest.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - The Black Hills is mourning the passing of two long-time local legislators. Lyndell Petersen passed away Tuesday at the age of 93. Petersen served in the South Dakota State Senate from 1977 to 1994. He was a Pennington County Commissioner from 2011 to 2016. Peterson was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2019.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - A Spearfish man pleaded guilty Tuesday in Fourth Circuit Court in the drug overdose death of another man in June of last year. Originally charged with second degree murder, Dan Lee Snyder pleaded guilty to distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death and ingestion of a controlled substance with the murder charge being dropped.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - A Rapid City woman is sentenced to 12 years in prison Monday after the death of her 18 year old quadriplegic son. 40 year old Naomia Prairie pleaded guilty in April to child abuse and abuse or neglect of a disabled adult. Prosecutors said at the time of his death, Donny Merrival weighed just over 80 pounds and died of extreme neglect while in Prairie’s care.
