ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Most people think the heart starts to lose it’s spark as you age, but local researchers at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC say otherwise. In a healthy heart, a natural electrical current shocks the heart’s cells. It’s what makes a heart beat. Researchers say as we age the cells grow bigger and closer together, ensuring the shock happens. They say there’s a lot of cellular growth from teenage years into early adulthood.

If that’s you, there’s some things you should keep in mind. The National Retail Federation says Father’s Day spending is expected to reach $22.4 billion dollars this year. That’s the second highest number since 2003.

RADFORD, Va. (WDBJ) - Radford University was awarded with a grant for $1.29 million, it’s part of the Pell Initiative for Virginia, a new effort to help with student success. There are currently 2,700 Pell-eligible students out of 5,000 total undergrads. Plans with the money include hiring student advocates who will provide one-on-one outreach to help students stay enrolled.

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - The deadly brain cancer Glioblastoma may have met its match. Researchers at Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC are creating a drug that stops this aggressive tumor from growing back. They say the survival rate after diagnosis is around 15 months. An assistant professor at Fralin has been studying how cancer cells communicate with each other. In his lab, they’re focusing on Connexin 43, a protein found inside the cancer cells that keeps them alive.
