Apr. 1—WATERLOO — A two-vehicle accident on Waterloo's west side caused a vehicle to flip over Sunday. According to police, Rachel Ruiz, 25, of Waterloo ran a yield sign at the corner of Plymouth Avenue and Ohio Street near Kittrell Elementary School and collided with Ale Nadarevic, also from Waterloo. Ruiz was driving a 2024 Honda HR-V that flipped over. Ruiz, who was wearing her seatbelt, was not injured. She was later cited for failure to yield.

Apr. 1—WATERLOO — The Board of Education got an earful during a recent public hearing about how a proposed increase in tax collections would impact Waterloo Community School District residents. A new state law requires all local governments to hold an additional public hearing on the maximum property tax levy prior to approving a budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Ahead of those hearings, a mailing sent to all property owners detailed the current and proposed tax collections and tax rate.

Mar. 31—CEDAR FALLS — A man was airlifted in critical condition to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City after a single vehicle accident Saturday night. Cedar Falls police, Cedar Falls Fire Rescue, Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office deputies and MercyOne Ambulance Service all responded to the area of North Union Road and Skyline Drive near Beaver Hills Country Club for a single vehicle motorcycle accident. The driver was wearing a helmet and protective riding gear.

Mar. 31—WATERLOO — One family was permanently displaced and another displaced temporarily Sunday after fire ravaged a duplex at 1237 Downing Court near Fred Becker Elementary School. According to Lt. Tony McGrane, the fire started in the bedroom and crews from Waterloo Fire Rescue were dispatched around 9 a.m. Severe smoke damage to both sides of the duplex caused the tenants of both units to be displaced.

Mar. 29—WATERLOO — With more than a third of all students missing at least 10% of class time, Waterloo Community Schools is striving to combat a chronic absenteeism problem. The Board of Education held a work session Tuesday looking at the issue. It's one in a series of sessions the board is holding to delve into feedback received from staff and the community at six town hall meetings on the proposed merger of the district's high schools.
