A High Court judge has thrown out a case brought by a former stable hand who wanted damages for hurting his back while emptying a wheelbarrow. Mark Lawless brought proceedings over a March 9, 2016, incident at Rossmore Cottage Stables in The Curragh, Co Kildare, where he was employed by racehorse trainer Adrian Keatley. Mr Lawless sought compensation from Mr Keatley for injury he allegedly sustained to his back when he emptied soiled hay from a wheelbarrow.

University Maternity Hospital Limerick has apologised to the mother of a little boy who died and acknowledged a breach in the hospital’s duty of care to the baby, which resulted in a delayed diagnosis “with devastating consequences”. “We are deeply sorry for your loss and for the profound sorrow of being denied the opportunity to watch your beloved son grow and thrive,” the hospital said in a letter read out in the High Court.

A woman who claims she suffered a brain bleed and stroke after taking migraine medication she bought at a Boots pharmacy has sued the pharmacy giant in the High Court. In the proceedings, it is claimed that the medication was allegedly inappropriately sold to Sigrid O’Meara and there was an alleged failure to advise her that the migraine medication is contra-indicated with an anti-depressant drug she was taking.

A 54-year-old woman who has terminal cervical cancer has settled a High Court action against the HSE and a US laboratory over the alleged misinterpretation of smear tests. The woman who cannot be identified by order of the court, the High Court heard, has incurable Stage Four cervical cancer. The action related to five smear tests taken between 2011 and 2018.

The minister for defence has been granted High Court orders preventing dozens of caravans camping on lands in the Curragh, Co Kildare. Mr Justice Brian Cregan ordered that caravans, cars and other vehicles parked on the Department of Defence land, including areas used by horse trainers for gallops attached to the Curragh Racecourse, to be removed by 1pm this Friday. Some of the caravans are also close to the Defence Forces firing ranges and have prevented the carrying out of training exercises.
