Editor's note: this story contains a mention of suicide. If you or someone you know may be considering suicide, contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by dialing or texting 988. A 911 dispatch center can be a high-stress work environment. To combat this, Summit County’s Emergency Communications Center recently added a new employee who’s ready to jump into action when a dispatcher starts to feel the stress of the job. His name is Archie. He's an 18-month-old certified therapy and facility dog.

Akron will move forward with a review of the police department’s use-of-force policy. Akron City Council voted 10 to 3 Monday night to put out a request for proposals for a consultant to conduct the review. The city will spend $350,000 on the contract. The policy review would ensure Akron police officers have the best possible training, Mayor Shammas Malik said. It would help make it clearer for officers to determine when to use force and when to de-escalate, he said.

Several new faces could be joining Akron’s Citizens’ Police Oversight Board this year. Akron officials have nominated four people to the board to fill three open seats and one seat that will be vacated later this summer. The nine-member board makes policy recommendations to the Akron Police Department and oversees the police auditor’s office, which reviews citizen complaints and use-of-force incidents.
