Several new faces could be joining Akron’s Citizens’ Police Oversight Board this year. Akron officials have nominated four people to the board to fill three open seats and one seat that will be vacated later this summer. The nine-member board makes policy recommendations to the Akron Police Department and oversees the police auditor’s office, which reviews citizen complaints and use-of-force incidents.

Stark County educators will participate in a community forum to discuss the proposed state budget's potential impact on school districts. Canton Mayor William Sherer II organized the June 10 forum after hearing concerns from Canton City School District Superintendent Jeffrey Talbert, he said. “It’s going to be devastating,” Sherer said.

Akron police are investigating an incident in which two officers opened fire on a 45-year-old man after he reportedly shot at them Sunday night. Officers were responding to a welfare check in the 400 block of Grant Street near the University of Akron campus around 11:23 p.m. when they heard gunshots nearby, according to an Akron Police Department press release.

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer for many and a popular time for Northeast Ohioans to get their favorite vegetables and flowers in the ground. But with the cool and wet weather so far this season, many gardeners – like Judy Sewell of the Garden Club of Kent - are holding off on digging in. “I personally am not putting my plants of this sort in until when I come back from the Indianapolis 500, so it'll be June,” Sewell said.

A newly released report shows the city of Akron and its police union are at an impasse over proposed pay raises in the union’s collective bargaining agreement. The contract expired on Dec. 31, 2024, and the city and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #7 have continued negotiations ever since. After failing to reach an agreement on several provisions, the city and union went into the fact-finding process, in which an independent attorney heard arguments from both sides and issued recommendations.
