One of the largest mergers or acquisitions in the past year brought a new corporate citizen to southeastern Wisconsin and with it, billions of dollars in additional planned investment. Indianapolis-based pharmaceutical giant Lilly paid $924.7 million, net of cash acquired, to acquire the entities that owned the 100,000-square-foot Nexus Pharmaceutical facility in Pleasant Prairie, according to securities filings.

Wisconsin’s real GDP grew 2.8% in 2024, one of the strongest years of growth in the past decades, despite slower growth to end the year, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. It was the strongest economic growth for Wisconsin since 2021, when the state grew 3.7% as the economy emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to that, the last time Wisconsin’s GDP topped 2.8% was 2010, also a year of 3.7% growth that came in the wake of an economic downturn.

Wisconsin’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.2% in February, even as the state lost 2,900 private sector jobs during the month, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The two measures come from separate surveys. The unemployment rate comes from a survey of households while job figures come from a survey of employers. Wisconsin’s labor force participation rate declined one-tenth of a point to 65.8%, continuing to outpace the national rate of 62.4%.
