SALEM, Ore. — A bill that some lawmakers hoped would help preserve local journalism by charging tech companies for content narrowly failed to pass in Salem, as other potential supporters warned it would be a poison pill for a media outlets already on the ropes. Under Senate Bill 686, social media companies would have to enter into an agreement with news outlets and pay for the content shared on news feeds, for example.

PORTLAND, Ore. — At Wednesday morning's "State of the Region" speech, Metro President Lynn Peterson provided a not-so-positive update on how the tri-county area is doing. She confirmed that Metro will not attempt to renew the Supportive Housing Services tax this November, admitting the use of those funds is not meeting voter expectations. "What we heard from voters is clear: they need to see more results before they are willing to extend. They want accountability and transparency.

PORTLAND, Ore. — For more than three decades, the James Beard Public Market has been little more than a Portland pipe dream. Now, the pieces are finally falling into place for it to become a reality, but it's still missing key financial support from the state. Last year, the foundation behind the public market project bought a huge space for it downtown. However, it still needs a great deal of work before it will be ready for vendors and visitors.

Hey lovely people, Your favorite wedding-obsessed friend from Bespoke Bride is back. After a decade of navigating every kind of wedding imaginable—from windswept Scottish highland affairs to sweltering city rooftop soirees—I’ve seen it all. PORTLAND, Ore. — On Friday, the Oregon Department of Forestry launched its annual aerial survey of forests throughout the state, something the agency has done since 1947. Over the next few months, crews will fly in a grid over the trees in an attempt to spot signs of damage from the air. "We have an observer on either side of the plane and they look out 2 miles, and they're trained to recognize sort of a confluence of factors," explained Sean McKenzie, who leads the project.

The other day we went to watch the swifts at Chapman, the way we have almost every September for 10 years. This time, there were... no birds. A small handful flew into the chimney and that was it. So I set out to find out where the birds went:

Vaux's swifts seem to be shunning the Chapman Elementary chimney this year https://t.co/rpDZtmTbd6

RT @ShawnReynolds_: Behind every person who works in tv news is an annoyed family member who refuses to watch news with them

Other parents: "What a great spot for a picnic!" Me: "Yeah but three people drowned here."

Many things suck about being a journalist, including being the most depressing person in many conversations. Meeting someone at a party: Q: What do you cover? A: culture wars, abortion Taking the kid on a college visit: Q: Have you been to Charlottesville before? A: Yes.
