NORWALK, Conn.—A $6 million proposal aimed at preserving arts, music, and other student-facing programs in Norwalk Public Schools is on uncertain footing following disagreements over fiscal oversight and legal authority between city officials and the school district. Mayor Harry Rilling and State Sen. Bob Duff announced the offer during a press conference on June 10, presenting it as a collaborative effort between city and state leaders to address public concerns over looming school program cuts.

My grandfather was born around 1900 and grew up in Chicago. As a young child, he was left-handed, but when he got to school, he was taught to use his right hand for writing and for everything else. At that time, left-handed people were simply not allowed, and left-handed kids who showed up at school were forced to be right-handed. As a result, in his generation, left-handed people were extremely rare.

The General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a $9.7 billion bond package Wednesday to finance school construction, transportation upgrades, and other capital projects for the next two fiscal years. The borrowing plan, which passed 35-1 in the Senate and 144-4 in the House, would expand non-education aid for cities and towns, increase affordable housing and combat homelessness, bolster security at places of worship, and support construction and renovation of child care facilities.

NORWALK, Conn. – From the Gazebo on Norwalk Green, the Norwalk Garden Club awarded over $3,000 in scholarships to four Norwalk students. The scholarships are given to Norwalk students who plan to pursue college studies in horticulture or related fields in environmental science. Recipients are typically either high school students or Norwalk residents currently enrolled in college. One of the 2025 recipients, P-TECH student David Helwing, was awarded $1,000.
