At least 21 people were killed in Kentucky and Missouri after storms and reported tornadoes tore through the region as part of an extreme weather outbreak on May 16, "leaving behind a trail of destruction," authorities said. The toll includes at least 14 dead in Kentucky, according to Gov. Andy Beshear, and seven in Missouri, authorities there said. The number killed is expected to increase, Beshear said.

At least nine people have died and others were injured in storms that struck Kentucky overnight. The Laurel County Sheriff's Office has reported the nine deaths in its eastern Kentucky community. Others have been reported in Louisville, with information continuing to roll in. "Kentucky, we are waking up to the news of multiple fatalities from last night’s storms," Gov. Andy Beshear posted on social media. "Please pray for those impacted.
