CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved more than $350 million in federal disaster loans to support North Carolina businesses, nonprofits, homeowners and renters affected by Hurricane Helene occurring on Sept. 25 through Dec. 28, 2024. As of April 17, 2025, the SBA has provided over $205 million to businesses/EIDL and over $144 million to residents in the wake of this disaster.

ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to an airplane crash near 5585 Rink Dam Road Friday afternoon. Around 12:50 p.m., a 1947 Pietenpol single-engine plane was attempting to land at a private field when it crashed. The pilot, Gregory Alan Deal, 74, of Morganton, and a passenger were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries. The FAA will be conducting an investigation.

UNION COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A 23-year-old woman has been arrested for distributing the illicit fentanyl that led to the death of a 30-year-old man in Union County. In early March, Union County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a home in Marshville regarding a reported narcotics overdose involving illicit fentanyl. The victim, 30-year-old Cole Manus, received emergency medical treatment on scene by Union EMS and was transported to a local hospital for further care.

(QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Salisbury Police Department has arrested 21-year-old Shykiem Verdell in connection with the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Emmanuel Houston Jr.On Thursday, February 20, at approximately 2:25 a.m., the Salisbury Police Department responded to 1416 Tilman St in reference to shots fired. Arriving officers located a male subject, identified as Emmanuel Houston Jr., who had been shot. Life-saving measures were attempted, but Houston succumbed to his injuries.
