PHOENIX – A suspect is in custody after a man was killed in a south Phoenix shooting on Monday afternoon, authorities said. The alleged shooter, 48-year-old Antonio Lopez Jr., was found hiding behind a trash bin near the shooting scene, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

PHOENIX – A man jumped to his death from the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway in Phoenix on Monday night, authorities said. The man, whose name and age were not released, climbed onto a freeway retaining wall above the area of 52nd and Van Buren streets, near the Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights, around 6 p.m., according to the Phoenix Police Department. After several hours of negotiations, he jumped to the roadway below, suffering serious injuries, police said.

PHOENIX — Tempe residents recycled a record amount of waste last year, according to city officials. Residents used the city’s yearly Zero Waste events, as well as Tempe’s Household Products Collection Center (HPCC), to recycle 463,628 pounds of waste. HPCC has helped residents safely dispose over 7.4 million pounds of hazardous waste since its opening in 1999.

PHOENIX — The westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway was closed near Sky Harbor Boulevard for several hours Monday night for a law enforcement situation, authorities said. The Arizona Department of Transportation announced the closure around 6:45 a.m.It’s not clear when the situation cleared up, but ADOT said the freeway was reopened before the Tuesday morning commute. Traffic was diverted to State Route 143 while the westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway was closed.

PHOENIX – Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes indicated Friday he is planning to seek reelection rather than aim for a higher office. The Democrat had openly discussed the possibility of running for Congress or governor, but it now seems Fontes aims to extend his tenure as the state’s top elections official. That’s because he made a post on X with a pretty clear hint about his intentions.
