PHOENIX – A child died hours after being injured in a crash that closed a portion of the Loop 202 Santan Freeway in Chandler for several hours on Thursday, authorities said. ABC15 reported that the 8-year-old girl died after receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries at a hospital. She had to be extricated from the vehicle. Eastbound Loop 202 was shut down due to a collision at Kyrene Road from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Indu, the last Phoenix Zoo elephant, dies at 59

PHOENIX – The Phoenix Zoo euthanized its last elephant on Thursday. Indu, who spent most of her life in captivity, was 59. “Her gentle spirit, intelligence and resilience inspired not only our staff but also the millions of guests who visited her over the years,” Bert Castro, president and CEO of the Phoenix Zoo, said in a press release.
Silver Alert issued for missing 83-year-old Phoenix man

PHOENIX – Authorities issued a Silver Alert on Thursday for a missing Phoenix man whose family is worried about his welfare. Dieter Juergen Mehl, 83, was last seen Wednesday near 43rd Avenue and Cactus Road, according to the alert. Mehl is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He drives a 2016 Buick LaCrosse sedan with Arizona plate KTV005.
Axon housing law could face legal challenge from Scottsdale

PHOENIX – Scottsdale officials are weighing their options after a new state law cleared the way for a controversial Axon housing development. During Tuesday’s meeting, the Scottsdale City Council allocated $100,000 to get outside legal advice on the possibility of challenging the constitutionality of Senate Bill 1543 in court. The resolution was adopted after a proposal to allocate $200,000 was cut in half. The city will retain Dominic Draye of Greenberg Traurig to explore the matter.

PHOENIX – A portion of the eastbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway was closed in Chandler after a crash on Thursday morning, authorities said. The freeway was closed around 9:30 a.m. due to a collision at Kyrene Road, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. According to ABC15, two people, including a small child, were injured in the crash and had to be extricated. Motorists were advised to expect delays on eastbound Loop 202 and seek alternate routes.

Phoenix house fire leaves 1 man in critical condition

PHOENIX – A man was critically injured Thursday in an early-morning Phoenix house fire, authorities said. Crews were dispatched to a home in the area of 91st Avenue and Osborn Road around 2 a.m. and encountered heavy smoke and flames, according to the Phoenix Fire Department. As firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, they found a man inside and carried him out the back of the house. He was then taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition.
