San Marcos plastics maker to shut down, lay off 41 workers

A plastics manufacturing facility in San Marcos is shutting down, resulting in 41 employees being laid off, according to documents filed with the state. Basler Plastics, based at 201 Centerpoint Road in San Marcos, will close by the end of the year, according to a Sept. 4 letter the company sent to the Texas Workforce Commission. The company gave its employees notice of the facility's pending closure on Sept. 4, and layoffs will begin Nov. 4 and continue through Dec. 31, according to the letter.

Jul. 26-The Edwards Aquifer Authority said Friday it is easing restrictions on pumping water from the aquifer, as recent rainfall in the area has eased drought conditions. The authority said "slightly improved" water levels and spring flow readings in the Edwards Aquifer have triggered a move from Stage 4 drought restrictions to Stage 3 restrictions.

Jul. 25-San Marcos police have arrested a Seguin man in connection with a July 14 fatal hit-and-run crash on Interstate 35. Emmanuel Nicholas Martinez, 35, turned himself in to police Wednesday, according to city spokesperson Nadine Bonewitz. Martinez faces charges of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and collision involving death. His bail was set at $50,000 on each charge, Bonewitz said in an email.

Jul. 24-A Hays County resident has tested positive for West Nile virus, county health officials said Wednesday. It's the first confirmed case of the virus in a human this year in Hays County, officials said. There were no confirmed cases in the county last year. The person who tested positive lives in the 78610 ZIP code, county officials said. That ZIP code is in north Hays County and includes most of Buda, along with portions of Kyle, Creedmoor, Mustang Ridge, Driftwood and Mountain City.

Jul. 18-A South Korean company that supplies parts for electric automaker Tesla Inc. is planning to build a $17 million plant in northern Hays County that could eventually employ 350 workers, local economic development officials say. Futronic USA, a subsidiary of South Korea-based Futronic, intends to acquire a property in Buda for its first U.S. facility, according to the Buda Economic Development Corp. and Greater San Marcos Partnership, a regional economic development organization.

May 9-More cases of rabies cases are popping up in the Texas Hill Country, and officials are warning residents to be wary when interacting with wild animals. Kerr County officials say they have confirmed the county's 11th rabies infection of the year, this one in a fox found in a residential area of Kerrville. There's no indication the animal came in contact with people or domestic pets, said Reagan Givens, director of Kerr County Animal Services.
